Narrative Present, Headlines, and Commentary
At an advanced level, the Simple Present extends beyond habits and facts:
⢠The "Historic Present" (Narrative Present): Used in telling stories or jokes to make past events feel immediate and dramatic. ("So he walks into the bar and says...")
⢠Newspaper Headlines: Used to describe recent past events for impact. ("President Signs New Bill")
⢠Sports Commentary/demonstrations: Describing rapid actions as they happen. ("Messi passes to Alvarez, he shoots, he scores!")
⢠Future in Time Clauses: After conjunctions like when, as soon as, until, before. ("I will tell him as soon as he arrives.")
⢠Performative Verbs: Statements that perform an action by being spoken. ("I promise," "I deny," "I resign.")
