Third Conditional (Unreal Past):

  • If + Past Perfect, ... Would Have + V3
  • Use: Regrets. Only for the past.
  • "If I had studied, I would have passed."

Mixed Conditionals:

  1. Past Action -> Present Result:
    • If + Past Perfect, ... Would + Verb
    • "If I had eaten breakfast, I would not be hungry now."
  2. Present Condition -> Past Result:
    • If + Past Simple, ... Would Have + V3
    • "If I were smarter, I would have said no."

  1. Expressing Regrets: "If I had studied harder, I would have passed."
  2. Imagining Different Past Outcomes: "If we had left earlier, we would have caught the train."

  4. General State affecting Past (Mixed): "If I were more organized, I would have finished the project on time."

3. When to Use It (Time Expressions/Signals)

  • 3rd Conditional: Yesterday, last year, back then (all past markers).
  • Mixed Conditionals: Now, today, currently (signals a present result of a past change).
