1. Definition & Core Meaning

Tom looks in his closet and sees that he needs new clothes. His favorite shirt is very old and faded, and it even has a big hole in the arm. He decides to go to the shopping mall on Saturday morning. The store is huge and bright. There are many racks of clothes everywhere.

He sees a bright red shirt on a hanger. "I really like red," Tom thinks to himself. He goes to the fitting room to try it on. But, oh no, it is too small and tight. He looks again and finds a nice blue shirt. He tries it on, and it fits him perfectly. It costs twenty dollars, which is a good price. Tom buys the blue shirt at the register. He goes home feeling happy with his new purchase.
