1. Definition & Core Meaning

Sentences perform 4 main functions:

  1. Declarative (Statement): Tells information. Ends with period (.)
    • "The sky is blue."
  2. Interrogative (Question): Asks something. Ends with question mark (?)
    • "Is the sky blue?"
  3. Imperative (Command/Request): Tells someone to do something. Ends with period or exclamation.
    • "Look at the sky."
  4. Exclamatory (Emotion): Shows strong feeling. Ends with exclamation mark (!)
    • "What a beautiful sky!"
