Introduction

Simple Past is used for:
• Completed actions in the past
• A sequence of actions in a story (He came in, took off his coat, and sat down)
• Past habits or states (I played tennis when I was young)
• Historical facts and general truths about the past
• Politeness: To soften requests or questions (e.g., "Did you want to see me?" instead of "Do you want...")

Contrast:
Unlike Present Perfect, Simple Past needs a specific past time (yesterday, in 1999, last week).
