Introduction

1. Definition & Core Meaning

At the intermediate level, sentence patterns get more flexible:

  1. SVOO (Double Objects):

    • "She gave John a book." (Indirect + Direct)
    • "She gave a book to John." (Direct + Preposition + Indirect)
    • Verbs: give, send, buy, make, tell, show.
  2. SVOC (Object Complements):

    • The complement describes the Object, not the Subject.
    • "They elected him president." (Noun complement)
    • "We consider it done." (Adjective/Participle complement)
    • Verbs: make, name, call, find, consider, elect.
  3. Adverbial Placement:

    • "I quickly ran." vs "I ran quickly."
    • Frequency adverbs usually before main verb: "I always eat."
